Sting 10-Gold 7, Vallejo Hurricanes 4

Sting Gold 10-U kicked off the tournament weekend with a 7-4 victory
over the Vallejo Hurricanes. With bases loaded, Nora Killian cracked a huge
hit, bringing all three runners home, to provide the margin of victory. On
defense Sting executed a nice double play when Stinger Samantha Chiang
scooped up a hot grounder and threw to first base Cassidy Villenueve for an
out. Villenueve then fired it back across the field to third base Killian who
tagged the runner for the double play.

Sting Gold 10-U played well throughout the two-day tournament. Among the
standouts were Gold pitcher Lena Mayer, who exhibited considerable grace
under pressure, throwing more strikes as the game progressed, and catcher
Josephine Hass, who held the aggressive base runners from Concord in check.
Saturday’s third game against the Napa Roadrunners saw
strikeouts by pitcher Nora Killian and clean fielding by Erin Hoynes.
When the Sting were at bat, Sophia Emmons-Bell connected for a solid
base hit and stole two more bases during the second inning. On Sunday,
Samantha Chiang pitched consistently, striking out two batters. The
Belmont Blast favored bunting, which challenged the Sting Gold
defense. But when Belmont did swing away, fielders Mayer and Gallagher
were right where they needed to be to catch the pop flies, Lee Labov
and Grace Duncan hustled well for the grounders, and Meg McCabe
provided perfect backup for third base. Olivia Duncan brought the
Sting fans to their feet with her hit in the bottom of the second. The
Vallejo tournament was the first for most of the Sting Gold 10-U
players, and they gained valuable experience squaring off against a
group of skillful teams.

Alameda Blaze 9, Sting 12-Gold 1

Sting Pitcher Kate Moore held the Blaze to one run on one hit for the
first four innings, striking out the side in the second and third, but the
Blaze lit up for seven runs in the fifth to blow the game open. In the bottom
of the fifth, Sting mounted a rally when Anna Moore doubled, stole third, and
scored on Anansa Ridley’s sacrifice fly to deep right. Stingers Clara
Obstfeld and Lila Rosenfeld also had hits. Maria Price-Hanson came on in
relief for Sting in the final inning and fanned two batters but the damage
had already been done.

San Jose Tremors 5, Sting 12-Gold 2

In the third, Catherine Cove beat out an infield single, then Anna
Moore knocked a hard single to the left side and Lindsey Baker slid under the
tag at the plate to score Sting’s first run of the game. The next batter,
Maria Price-Hanson, smacked a hard grounder that scored Anansa Ridley in
another close play at the plate. Sting defense played well throughout, with
Kate Moore and Price-Hanson sharing pitching duties, and Sarah Hoynes at
second, Ridley at shortstop, and Lila Rosenfeld at third handling almost
everything that came their way. Over the course of the game, however, the
Blaze was able to combine several walks, a few hits, and aggressive
base-running to manufacture enough runs to prevail.
