In the USSSA 12b/13b Fall State Qualifier Tournament at Hayward’s Alden Oliver Sport’s Park on September 15 and 16, Sting 12U Gold won three games and lost one. Sting won all three games in pool play on Saturday, but fell short in an International Tie Breaker game against their recurring nemesis, the Pleasanton Phantom.

In the first game in pool play, Sting faced Livermore Smoke Red. Sting struck right away, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning as Jordan Baker hit an RBI single followed by a triple by Kate Moore to knock in J. Baker. J. Baker finished the game 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored. K. Moore also went 3-for-3, with a home run, 3 RBI’s and 3 runs scored. Izzy Lubin-Brown pitched all five innings allowing only three unearned runs. The final score was 8-3.

In the second game, Sting overcame a 0-3 deficit to win 5-3. The Manteca She Devils scored one run in each of the first three innings with the benefit of only one base hit. In the bottom of the third, Sting finally broke through taking advantage of walks to Molly Cohen, Anna Moore and J. Baker and singles by Clara Obstfeld and Lubin-Brown to score all five of their runs. With time expired, pitcher J. Baker set the She Devils down in order in the fourth inning. J. Baker recorded seven strike outs including five in a row in the second and third innings.

In the third game in pool play, Sting faced the Clayton Valley Stars. The Stars scored first on a home run by their pitcher. Pitching for Sting, K. Moore allowed only one other hit through the first three innings. In the top of the fourth with the score tied 1-1, Sting broke out for four runs. K. Moore got things started with a walk and a steal. Lubin-Brown then doubled in the go-ahead run. Annie Smith walked as Lindsey Baker and Cohen followed up with singles to put Sting ahead, 5-1. With time expired, the same batter who had homered in the first, led off the bottom of the inning with a triple. A Sting fielding error and a walk scored the run and put two more runners on base. With two outs and the potential tying run at the plate, a sharply hit ball skipped past short stop into left field scoring both runners and making the score 5-4. At the end of the play, as the ball was returned to K. Moore in the pitching circle, the runner at first tried to advance to second. K. Moore alertly ran her down and tossed to Katie Nordahl at first for the final out of the game.

On Sunday, Sting faced the Pleasanton Phantom. Sting took the early lead in the bottom of the first, as A. Moore walked and scored on a single by J. Baker. Phantom answered back in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of two walks, two fielding errors and three singles to score four runs. Sting tied the game up at 4-4 in the third as the Phantom short stop made errors on consecutive plays. J. Baker followed with a double and Lubin-Brown hit to center where another error allowed J. Baker to score. In the top of the fourth, J. Baker pitched her way out of a bases-loaded-no-outs jam to keep the game tied. With time expired, the fifth inning started for Phantom with the Tie Breaker runner at second base. A hit batsman and a single led to another bases-loaded-no-outs jam. J. Baker retired the next two batters, only to face the Phantom pitcher, Krista Williams, who tripled into left field to clear the bases. Sting went quietly in the bottom of the inning, losing 7-4.
